Allen wrench troubles
by: Tammy

Hi Mike,
You said it does not fit. This leads me to believe it’s either to big or two small.
These are metric set screws, so first make sure you are using a metric set of allen wrenches.

Next, if the problem is that the allen wrench does not grab because it is stripped, there are a couple of things that can be done if you know it is the correct size.

First thing to do, is spray some liquid wrench into the set screw and let set for awhile to start breaking down the crusty bond that forms inside.

Some things you can try.
1. You can get a new allen wrench.
2. You can grind off your existing allen wrench and leave the burr. Tap it into the set screw with a hammer and let that burr work for you.
3. Try sinking the allen wrench into the hole with a rubber band stretched over the tip of the allen wrench to add additional grip power.

Lastly, if you simply cannot break the bond, drill it out and either rivet with larger rivet or drill and tap for a machine screw.
Or you can replace the fitting with a new eye end.

This should help.
Let me know if you have any other questions.
Good luck with your task, Tammy
