Zipper repair?

by Bruce Sucher
(Belle Harbor, N.Y.)

I have a 1985 Grady White Sailfish. The isinglass panel on the helm side is torn along the seam. I tried to remove the whole section, but one of the zippers is jammed in place. The zipper seems to be in good shape, but the saltwater has had its way with the aluminum slide. If I remove the slide without damaging the zipper teeth can the slide and one of your extenders be used? Thanks Bruce Sucher

Hi Bruce,
If you can get the zipper slider off without damaging teeth, it should work with no problem and even if you break a tooth, it still may work. You will have to pry the zipper slider open in order for it to release the teeth. Try grabbing the slider with a pair of vice grips and then using a 3/8" wide flat tip screwdriver to carefully widen the opening on the slider until it releases the teeth. Change out all metal sliders yearly in a salt water environment or use stainless steel. Hope this helps.
